Chapter 2 Flashcards
What is group 0
The Noble gasses
How did scientists attempt to order the elements before the modern periodic table?
They tried to order them based on their atomic mass.
What are the properties of metals?
Conduct electricity, shiny when cut, good conductors of heat, strong (except for alkali metals which are soft), malleable, ductile, sonorous, solids (except for mercury which is a liquid), high melting points and heavy/dense (except for alkali metals which are generally less dense than water and float)
What are some of the properties of transitional metals?
Many transition elements have ions with different charges they often form coloured compounds and are useful as catalysts.
What do we mean by the term metalloids or semi-metals
Elements that share some of the properties of metals and non-metals e.g. Carbon.
Where are the metals and non-metals found on the periodic table?
The majority of elements are metals. Metals are found to the left and towards the bottom of the periodic table. Non-metals are found towards the right and top of the periodic table.
What did Mendeleev do that made scientists trust his model of the periodic table?
He left spaces for elements that had not yet been found and predicted the properties of these unknown elements.
How are elements shown on the modern periodic table?
They are arranged in groups of elements with similar properties and in periods by atomic number
Why are the noble gasses (group 0) non-reactive?
Because they have full stable outer shells i.e 2 or 8…..
