Chapter 14 Flashcards
What does biodegradable mean?
Materials that can be broken down by microorganisms
What do we mean by portable water?
Water that is fit to drink
How can we make portable water?
- Chlorination or using UV light or ozone kills bacteria that cause disease such as Typhoid.
- Reverse osmosis
- Distillation
What do we mean by Life Cycle analysis (LCA)?
The assessment of the environmental impact of a product throughout its life
raw materials extract - manufacture - use/reuse - maintenance - recycle/waste management
How is LCA used?
LCA is used to assess the impact of a product on the environment. It ONLY considers energy use and environmental impact
What do we mean by finite?
Note sometimes the term non-renewable is used.
Resources that are being used up faster than they can be replaced
.
What do we mean by renewable?
Resources that can be replaced at the same rate as they re used e.g crops used as bio fuels, wood
What do we mean by recycle?
The process in which materials are processed to be used again
What do we mean by reuse?
The reuse of a material for something else e.g. fizzy drinks bottles could be reused as water bottles.
Give some examples of finite resources?
Crude oil, coal
What do we mean by bioleaching? (Higher only)
Bioleaching is the extraction of metals from their ores through the use of living organisms.
