Hair Flashcards
hair follicle
diagonal tube of epithelium and connective tissue that originates deep in the epidermis
accessory organs (appendages)
hair, nails, cutaneous glands
pilus
hair; slender filament of keratinized cells that grow from hair follicle
shaft
portion above skin surface
root
hair shaft below surface, within the follicle
bulb
swelling at end of root
dermal papilla
bit of vascular connective tissue that provides hair with its sole source of nutrition
hair matrix
exclusive site of cellular mitosis and hair growth
cuticle
surface layer of a hair; composed of thin scaly cells that overlap each other and resist pulling of hair out of its follicle
cortex
composed of several layers of elongated keratinized cells, makes up bulk of hair
medulla
composed of loosely arranged cells and air spaces, only in thickest hairs
root sheath
composed of layer of epithelium alongside the hair, layer of condensed dermal connective tissue around epithelial layer
hair receptors
nerve fibers that coil around follicle and respond to hair movements
piloerector (pilomotor) muscle
smooth muscle that contracts in response to stimuli and pulls the follicle into a more vertical position and makes hair stand upright
eumelanin
melanin that makes black or brown hair
