Epidermis Flashcards
epidermis
surface of skin that consists of dead cells packed with keratin
functions of integumentary system
resistance to trauma & infection, water retention, vitamin D synthesis, sensation, thermoregulation, nonverbal communication
keratinocytes
epidermis; packed with tough protein keratin
melanocytes
pigment producing cells in basal layer of epidermis
tactile cells
sense of touch
stem cells
divide and replace other epidermal cells that die
dendritic cells
detect foreign matter and microbes invading the skin
epidermis layers
stratum basale, stratum spinosum, stratum lucidum, stratum corneum, stratum granulosum
stratum basale
deep, single layer of stem cells, keratinocytes, melanocytes, and tactile cells. produces keratinocytes
stratum spinosum
thickest layer of epidermis, consisting of many layers of keratinocytes and dendritic cells
stratum granulosum
water barrier. 3-5 layers of flat keratinocytes with coarse, dark-staining granules
stratum lucidum
clear (lucid) layer of dead cells with no internal structure. only in thick skin of palms and soles
stratum corneum
up to 30 layers of dead, keratinocytes that gives skin it’s toughness
exfoliate
flake off (skin)
dander
dead keratinocytes that flakes off skin
