Hair Flashcards
What is hair made up of
Dead keratinized cells
Where does hair originate
Epidermal penetration of dermis called “hair follicle”
How does hair growth begin
It begins with production of keratinocytes
External layer of hair
Is completely dead
Layers of hair follicle
Internal root sheath, external root sheath, glassy membrane
Functions of hair
Protection, sensory input, thermoregulation, communication
Muscle each hair root is connected to
Arrector pili (adds insulation, ie goose bumps)
Phases of hair growth
Anagen, catagen, telogen
Anagen phase
Cells divide rapidly at the root which pushes the hair shaft up and out. This takes 2 to 7 years
Catagen
Transitional phase where growth stops and external root sheath attaches to the root of the hair
Telogen
Hair follicle is at rest, lasts for about 2 to 4 months and then anagen begins again
