Connective Tissues Flashcards
Connective Tissue
Most abundant type of tissue in the body, the functions are strength/support, protection, and insulation
Extracellular matrix of connective tissue
Has more matrix substance and less cells
ECM composition
Collagen, Elastin, Reticular fibers, cells
Types of connective tissue
Mesenchyme, Areolar, Adipose, Reticular Tissue, Dense Regular, Dense Irregular, Elastic, Cartilage (multiple types)
Mesenchyme
Embryonic tissue, all connective tissues come from this, some remain as stem cells as adults
Areolar (structure)
gel-like matrix, scattered fibrous proteins, hyalunic acid
Areolar (cells)
Fibroblasts, macrophages/mast cells (immune cells), adipocytes (fat cells)
Areolar (functions)
Packing material, space for diffusion, reserve for salts and waters
Areolar (locations)
Most widely distributed connective tissue, surround organs and capillaries, attaches epithelium to underlying tissues
Adipose (functions)
Energy storage, insulation, supports/protects organs
Adipose (Locations)
Subcutaneous (hypodermis), around kindeys, mammary gland
Reticular (functions)
support of soft tissue of organ/small blood vessels
Reticular (locations)
Lymph nodes, spleen, bone marrow
Dense Regular (Structure)
Matrix of parallel fibers, primary fibroblasts
Dense Regular (functions)
Tensile strength/stretch resistance in 1 direction
