Bone development (osteogenesis) Flashcards
Intermembranous ossification
fetal into childhood, many skull bones /facial, plus clavicle. This is good for giving birth . Starts in the mesenchyme and center of bone and moves superficially
Endochondral ossification
Begins at fetal and ends when full height is reached
Bone tissue replaces cartilage
Primary ossification (shaft)
Uses center to out and out to in
Chondrocytes calcify the matrix
bone collar formed
cells migrate to medullary cavity to form spongy bone
Secondary ossification (ends)
Chondrocytes calcify
Blasts invade and create spongy bone
Hyaline remains at outer layer of epiphysis
Bone remodeling
Occurs at the periosteal and endosteal surface
It is a constant process but depends on the function and use of the bone
Osteoblasts
Lay down matrix
Osteoclasts
Break down matrix
Ca2+ released into blood
