Haemolytic Anaemia Flashcards
1
Q
How does the bone marrow respond to haemolysis?
A
Reticulocytosis and erythroid hyperplasia
2
Q
What 3 substances are raised in haemolysis?
A
- Bilirubin; from haem breakdown (pre-hepatic jaundice).
- Urinary urobilinogen
- Lactic dehydrogenase (LDH)
3
Q
What would indicate an increase in red cell production?
A
Elevated reticulocytes and MCV with polychromasia
4
Q
What are 2 signs of intravascular haemolysis?
A
- Methaemalbunimaemia: free haem from breakdown of Hb joins with albumin to form methaemalbumin.
- Haemoglobinuria: causes red-brown urien, in absence of RBCs.
5
Q
These structures seen on blood film correspond to what underlying disease:
1) Schisotcytes
2) Spherocytes
3) Heinz bodies
A
1) Microangiopathic haemolytic anaemia (MAHA)
2) Spherocytosis or autoimmune haemolytic anaemia
3) G6PD
6
Q
What is MAHA?
A
A mechanical disruption of RBCs in the circulation, causing intravascular haemolysis and schistocytes.
7
Q
State 3 causes of MAHA
A
- Haemolytic uraemia syndrome
- PET
- Thrombotic thrombocytopenia purpura
