because hematopoiesis in the small bones of the hands and feet ceases at this age

What is hand-foot syndrome?
A
it is a presentation of SCD seen in younger children (haematopoiesis in the small bones of hands and feet)
It is caused by the sickling of red blood cells interfering with circulation to the hands and feet. This results in swelling, pain and erythema with a sudden onset.
The syndrome usually lasts 1-2 weeks and is treated supportively
