Relates to composition of stages of growth and habitats in woodland
Eg 30% thicket, 60% maturing plantations
What is age structure?
Appropriate age of the canopy trees, and the number of different categories.
Eg 120 year old standards
What is vertical structure?
Canopy layer, shrub layer, field layer, ground layer.

Quantitative- analysing numerical data
Qualitative- analysing observations, interpretation
What methods would you use to survey species distribution on the ground?
Line transect - place a tape measure and count along the line
Quadrat - throw quadrat randomly and count species in square
What archeological features would show ancient woodland?
Saw pits, burial mounds, woodland name, indicator species, ditch and bank.
