Body Language Of Trees Flashcards
Where does reaction wood form?
Top side of limb for angiosperms,
Bottom side for conifers.
What is the axiom of uniform stress?
Trees will typically grow with a taper- thicker at base and thinner at top.
What is a hazard beam?
Shearing of the wood grain along a line of weakness, associated with bending pressure applied on the curve or branch or stem.
What is included bark?
Branch union that has grown over the bark of an adjacent stem. Happens when trees have codominant leaders.
What is finer buckling / bottle butt?
Swelling of the stem, reaction wood growing to reinforce that section. Caused by failure of the wood fibers when tree has been subject to high winds.
What tissue is formed to heal the tree?
Callus growth formed of undifferentiated parenchyma cells.
