Habitat Flashcards
What is a biological corridor
linking two isolated areas of the same habitats
How does habitat shape affect a habitat
conditions round the edge will be a combination of both habitats e.g. lighter at an edge of a forest
How do light levels affect habitats
Shading can inhibit woodland floor growth
Can be changed by selectively felling trees
How does water depth affect plants
root anchorage and nutrient absorption from sediments becomes more difficult
How does the vegetation age structure work
Older Species (trees) die which creates space for new species (tree saplings) If mass planting takes place then over time the density will increase reducing the biodiversity on the floor
How does water help habitats
Allows birds and mammals to drink, amphibians to breed and a place for aquatic species to live
How to increase dissolved oxygen
Narrow rivers to increase flow rate
Increasing turbulence
How does temperature affect species
Warm temperatures are needed for development of eggs
shallow water warms up quicker
Vegetation clearings can be made to create warm spots
How can light levels be increased?
Canopy clearings
Why can’t plants survive acidic soils?
Few nitrogen-fixing bacteria
What can a low/high pH do to enzymes
Denature them
How are biotic factors controlled
Control of predation Control of competitors Pollination Seed dispersal Control of pathogens Control of ecological succession
5 factors that activities plagioclimax
Grazing, Mowing, Burning, Coppicing, Pollarding
