Why does bacterial vaginosis happen?
The normal flora within the vagina is replaced with anaerobic bacteria
What is the treatment of bacterial vaginosis?
- Metronidazole 500mg PO BID X 7 days
- Metronidazole gel 0.75% 5g once daily X 5 days
- Clindamycin cream 2% 5g HS X 7 days
Why does Trichomoniasis occur?
Most prevalent non viral STI
1. Due to protozoan parasite Trichomonas vaginalsis
What is the treatment for women when have trichomoniasis?
Metronidazole 500mg PO BID X 7 days
What is vulvovaginal candidiasis?
Occurs due to Candida albicans
What is the treatment of vulvovaginal candidiasis?
Rx (oral): Fluconazole 150mg X 1
What is PID and the most common agents?
- Spectrum of inflammatory disorders of the upper female genital tract
- N. Gonorrhoeae, C. Trachomatis
What is the treatment of PID?
- Ceftriaxone 1 g IV every 24 hours + Doxycycline 100mg PO/IV every 12 hours + metronidazole 500mg PO/IV every 12 hours
- Cefotetan 2g IV every 12 hours + doxycycline 100mg PO/IV every 12 hours
- Cefoxitin 2 g IV every 6 hours + Doxycycline 100mg PO/IV every 12 hours
What has anaerobic and non-anaerobic coverage?
NON: Ceftriaxone + Doxycycline + Metronidazole
YES: Cefotetan + Doxycycline ; Cefoxitin + Doxycycline
What is the treatment for uncomplicated cystitis (UTI)
For non-pregnant women
*only treat if symptomatic
* Bactrim, Nitrofurantoin, Fosfomycin
What is the treatment for cystitis in pregnant women?
Cystitis in pregnant women is always complicated
*treat the cystitis regardless of the s/s
