growth spurt –> thelarche –> pubarche (adrenarche) –> menarche

Obesity
Less stressful living
Mother with early puberty
Urban Dwelling
Black Race: 6-12 months early, precocious puberty is MORE likely

What role does estrogen play in puberty?
increased GnRH causes estrogen production, which causes development of secondary sex characteristics
What role doe androgens (DHEA and DHEA-S) play in puberty?
produced by adrenal glands, stimulate growth of pubic hair

Pre puberty
NO breast buds, only papilla elevated
No pubic hair
What is average age for tanner stage 1
9-11 years
What is Tanner Stage 2
Breast buds and papilla elevated
Downy pigmented pubic hair, longer but straight along labia majora; hair is sparse

What is Tanner stage 3?
Breast mound enlargement - present rounded contour
Pubic hair is darker, coarser, curling on mons and labia majora

What is tanner stage 4?
Breast: Areola and papilla are elevated to form a second mound above level of the rest of breast
Adult-type pubic hair with no spread to medial surface of thighs (hair is darker, curly, coarser over mons and labia, but area is smaller than adult)

What is tanner stage 5?
Breast: recession of the areola to mound of breast (now flush - no secondary mound)
Extension of pubic hair to medial thigh
