What are the 5 primary taste that can be sensed?
Sour, Sweet, Bitter, Salty, Umami.
What is the Anatomy of the Taste buds & Papillae?
Receptors for sensation of taste are found in the taste buds.
Some are also found in the soft palate, Pharynx & Epiglottis.
What does the Taste bud Cell consist of?
Oval shape and consist of 3 kinds of cells:
Supporting, Gustatory Receptor, Basal cells.
What are Papillae on the tongue?
There are 3 types that change with surface area:
Vallate Papillae, Fungiform Papillae, Foliate Papillae.
What is the Papillae found in small trenches on large margins of the tongue?
This type of papillae is called Foliate Papillae.
Where is Fungiform Papillae found?
Mushroom shaped, scattered over entire surface of the tongue, contains five taste buds each.
What is the Physiology of Gustation?
Chemicals that stimulate Gustatory receptor cells known as Tastant.
Once a “Tastant” is dissolved in saliva it can make contact with receptors.

What is involved in Taste Thresholds and Adaptation?
The threshold varies for each of the Primary taste.
Taste Adaptation is due to changes that occur in the taste receptors, olfactory receptors, and in neurons of the gustatory pathways in the CNS.
What sensation of taste has the lowest threshold?
The sensation of taste for Bitter foods.
Why is it possible for the Threshold of Bitter foods being so low?
This may be an Evolutionary benefit as Poisonous substances are commonly bitter.
What is the Gustatory Pathway?
From the Taste buds, nn impulses propagate along the CNS to the Gustatory Nucleus in the Medulla Oblagont.
From the Medulla some Axons carrying taste signals project to the limbic system and the Thalamus.
Taste signals that project from the Thalamus to the (Primary Gustatory Area) in the partial lobe of the cerebral cortex gives rise to the conscious perception of taste.
