what are the advantages of visual guidance
highlight specific weaknesses(show them what is wrong)
demonstration so performer can really see what the skill its suppose to look like

used by coaches at the start of games during team talks and time outs
correct the mental image, highlight the mistake and make suggestions on how to improve
used to develop tactical understanding and to increase the speed of transitions when no time for visual guidance
what are the disadvantages of visual guidance
can be difficult for beginner to replicate a complex skill
skill demonstrated have to be performed correctly in order for performer to correctly copy
what are the advantages of verbal guidance
highlight specific weaknesses
creates mental image for performer
usually used together with visual guidance
what are the disadvantages of verbal guidance
beginners may not recognise technical terms
too much info can cause confusion
may lose concentration with too much waffle
some complex skills difficult to describe
what are the advantages of manual guidance
helps to eliminate danger, minimise risks
builds confidence in cognitive performers
-reduces fear and anxiety
gains a feel for correct technique
what are the disadvantages of manual guidance
detrimental to performer if overused
performer can develop reliance that can interfere with feel for movement
performer can feel dependent and lose confidence when support not available
hands on support can be off-putting if coach too close to performer
what are the advantages of mechanical guidance
builds confidence
eliminates danger, prevents injury
can be used without direct coach contact
what are the disadvantages of mechanical guidance
if used too much, performer can develop dependency on equipment
loss of confidence if performer cant perform without it
