What are the 3 legal classifications of medicines sold in the UK?
General sale medicines (GSL)
•Pharmacy medicines (P)
•Prescription-only medicines (POM)
what is PO?
it is pharmacy only medications
- this is NOT a legal classification
legally- are GSL- but sale is restricted to pharmacy
when do medicines usually switch classes?
when they are re-classified by the MHRA
What pattern do drugs usually re-classify?
POM>P>GSL
Do pharmacists like when medicines re-classify?
yes- as they can greater use their expertise/ give more access to medication
not keen on opposite : GSL>P>POM
What is a recent POM>P switch?
tamsulosin, naproxen, chloramphenicol, sumatriptan, sildenafil
how is a GSL medicine defined?
defined in the HMR 2012 as a product that is
•not a POM or a P
•and is covered by a marketing authorisation that the product is to be available on general sale
- can be sold outside a pharmacy
can some medicines be a GSL and a POM/P?
Yes- doses can vary in classification. usually smaller doses tend to be GSL’s more
A GSL may only be supplied at a pharmacy or elsewhere when these conditions are fulfilled:
the premises are able to be closed so as to exclude the public
•the product must have been made up for sale in a container elsewhere and not have been opened since then
what happens if the product is in schedule 15?
it must be sold in accordance with the requirements specified in that Schedule
can a GSL be sold from a vending machine?
yes-provided the machine is located in premises which the occupier is able to close so as to exclude the public
what is the requirements for a GSL being sold on an aircraft/ train?
The sale must be made by the operator or commander of an aircraft or the operator of a train
Must have been made up for sale or supply in a container elsewhere than at the place at which it is sold or supplied
•Must be stored in a part of the aircraft or train which the operator is able to close so as to exclude the public
is an eye ointment a GSL?
no
are the following GSL?: Anthelmintics
for parenteraladministration
•enemas
•for use wholly mainly for irrigation of wounds or of the bladder, vagina or rectum
•for administration wholly or mainly to children being a preparation of aloxiprinor aspirin
unless the marketing authorisation classifies them as GSL
