Growth Flashcards
What time periods is a child most rapidly growing?
Infancy and adolescence.
What percent of the population will be out of 2 standard deviations for growth measurements.
5% (2.5% < 5th and 2.5% > 95%). So look for patterns.
What three organ systems that do not grow most rapidly during infancy and adolescence?
1) Brain - most rapidly during the first 6 years with little change after age 10 years.
2) Lymphoid tissue - tissue volume increases rapidly before puberty and then declines until adult levels.
3) Reproduction organs - slow growth until puberty.pp
What is the growth pattern for a genetically small child?
They will grow parallel to std curves
What is the growth rate for a child who had a problem in utero?
Typically small for gestational age at birth and over time will fall further away from population means on all parameters.
Postnatal onset of a growth problem will present as what?
Falling off a previous stable growth curve
Predicting midparental height for girls?
(Father’s height - 13 cm) + Mother’s height) / 2
Predicting midparental height for boys?
(Mother’s height + 13cm + father’s height) / 2
What is constitutional growth delay?
Both birth weight and height are initially normal but do fall off PROPORTIONALLY during the first two tears of life. PTs eventually become parallel to 3rd percentile.
Is there any sparing of OFC in constitutional Growth delay?
Yes, it is relatively spared.
What are the usual findings of intrauterine insult/genetic Abn?
Weight, height, and OFC are below the norms.
What are the growth parameters for structural dystrophies/endocrine eriologies?
OFC is usually spared while height and weight are severally affected.
What are the growth findings in caloric insufficiency?
OFC and height are spared but weight loss is concerning.
When is birth weight regained?
Birth weight is regained by day 10 - 14.
When does birth weight double?
Birth weight doubles by 4 months
