- forming
- storming

what is stage 1 forming
A
- group members get to know each other
- the leader/coach tells the group what to do + sets out the goals

what is stage 2 storming
A
- group members argue + compete with each other + different types of leaders emerge
- the coach must drive the team through this stage
- cliques form at this stage + there may be power struggles
- the team must be focused on its goals to avoid distractions from emotional issues

what is stage 3 norming
A
- group members agree how to work together + rules/goals/commands are developed, with acceptable behaviour defined
- leaders emerge and take responsibility + the coach starts to step back
- decisions are made through group agreement and smaller decisions to groups within

what is stage 4 performing
A
- the group works as a unit, group members are interdependent + the more skillful/experienced members make decisions independently
- focused on achieving goals
- little or no interference from the coach - the coach becomes the consultant
- disagreements are handled positively and the team makes the changed required
