Tuckman’s model
Forming, storming, morning, performing
Forming
Getting to know each other’s strengths/ weaknesses; develop social relationships; reliant on the coach to bring the group together, figure out the goal
Storming
Infighting and conflict as people establish roles/ positions; confrontation with leaders
Norming
Conflicts are resolved; the team begins to unify and cooperate focussing on achieving goals; standards / norms are accepted and the cohesion of the team develops; motivation and success rise
Performing
Common goals, success, team support each other and understand their roles; motivation and enjoyment is high; respect for other members and leaders is high
Features of a group
Interaction between group members; a collective identity; shared objectives or a common goal; communication
Collective identity
A team can be recognised easily as they are wearing the same uniform/ colour; this develops affiliation which creates motivation and a belonging
Interaction
The way players work together to complete a task; are they loud or quiet; playful or serious
Communication
To help with interaction, players talk and communicate non-verbally (hand signals)
Shared goal or purpose
The prospect of achieving success is often what keeps players in the team and working together.
All the players should want to aim for the same goal to have maximum motivation
