What 4 characteristics does a group always have?
A
- Interaction between group members
- A collective identity
- Communication
- A shared goal or purpose

What is collective identity?
A
- this means a team can be recognised easily by wearing the same kit.
- team members will feel a strong affiliation to the team and gain a sense of pride when they wear the same clothing
- this affiliation is important to give motivation and a sense of belonging

What is interaction?
A
- the way team players work together to complete a task
- team members should operate in their own role successfully and link this role with others

What is communication?
A
- to help with interaction, individual players should talk and communicate non-verbally
- eg: coded call, hand signals to shows where the balls going

What is a shared goal or purpose?
A
- the prospect of achieving success is what keeps players in the team and working for each other
- all players should want to aim for the same goal to have maximum motivation

What are the 4 stages of Tuckman’s model?
A
- Forming
- Storming
- Norming
- Performing

What happens in the forming stage?
A
- getting to know each other, strengths/weaknesses, will people fit in
- develop social relationships
- reliant on the coach to bring group together
- figure out the goal

What happens in the storming stage?
A
- infighting and conflict as people establish roles/positions
- confrontation with leaders

What happens in the norming stage?
A
- cooperation, conflicts are resolved
- team begins to unify and focusses on achieving goals
- standards/norms are accepted and the cohesion of the team develops
- motivation and success rise

What happens in the performing stage?
A
- common goals, success, team support each other and understand their roles
- motivation and enjoyment is high
- respect for other members and leaders is high
