What are group differences ?
Consistently observed differences among divers groups of students.
What is culture?
The behaviours made beliefs systems of a social group
What is ethnic group ?
A group of individuals who have common historical routs, values, beliefs, and behaviours and who share a sense of interdependence.
How can teachers avoid misunderstandings related to culture?
Don’t rush students understanding
Encourage communication
Educate yourself about various cultural and ethnic backgrounds
What is multicultural education ?
- integrating perspectives and experiences of numerous cultural groups throughout the curriculum.
- looking critically at our own assumptions
- incorporating the values beliefs and traditions of many cultures into the curriculum.
- breaking down stereotypes
- acknowledging multiple cultural affiliations
- promoting productive interaction among students form divers racial and ethnic groups

What are the gender differences in physical activity and motor skills ?
Boys are more active. Girls are better st fine motor skills
What are the gender differences in cognitive and academic abilities
Girls are slightly better verbal ability. Boys have slightly better visual spacisk ability. And greater variability
What gender differences can be found in achievement motivation.
Girls are more engaged and motivated to do well in school. Boys are more willing to take academic challenges and risks
What are the gender differences in sense of self ?
Self worth is similar until puberty. Then, boys stay high; girls drop. Boys overestimate abilities ; girls underestimate them.
What are the gender differences in interpersonal behaviour and relationships.
Girls have more intimate friendships. Boys gave larger play groups. Boys are more competitive. Girls are more cooperative.
What are the gender differences in classroom behaviour
Boys are more participatory than girls. More apt to be called on by teachers. Tend to ignore girls in cooperative learning groups.
Girls are not as likely to volunteer answers in large group discussions.

How can we promote gender equity ?
Use your knowledge of gender differences to create equitable opportunities
Be in the lookout for gender stereotypes in texts, homework, assignments, etc.
Occasionally ask students to work in same sec groups of pairs.
Monitor yourself to sss if you are unintentionally treating boys and girls differently.
What are the risk factors of poverty

What is an at risk student ?
An at risk student has s higher probability of failing to acquire the minimal academic skills necessary for success

History of academic failure Older age in comparison to classmates Emotional and behavioural problems Lack of psychological attachment to school Low achieving peer group disinvolvement
Why do students drop out ?
No family or peer encouragement to stick with it.

An at risk/ low income student succeeds against the odds
