Group 7 Flashcards
What is the appearance of fluorine at room temperature?
gas
lighter colour than chlorine
What is the appearance of Chlorine at room temperature?
gas
pale green
What is the appearance of Bromine at room temperature?
liquid red/brown
very easily turns into a gas
What is the appearance of Iodine at room temperature?
solid
grey
What is the appearance of Astatine at room temperature?
solid
dark grey/black
Why does reactivity decrease as you go down group 7?
all need to gain 1 electron
down the group, there are more electron shells
weaker attraction between the nucleus and incoming electron
hard to gain electron therefore less reactive
Reactivity series?
Potassium
Calcium
Magnesium
Aluminium
Carbon
Zinc
Hydrogen
Copper
Silver
Chlorine + Potassium bromide ->
colour change?
Bromine + Potassium chloride
red / orange solution
Bromine + Potassium chloride ->
colour change?
no reaction
Iodine + Potassium chloride ->
colour change?
no reaction
Chlorine + potassium iodide ->
colour change?
Iodine + potassium chloride
brown solution
Iodine + potassium bromide ->
colour change?
no reaction
Bromine + Potassium iodide ->
colour change?
Iodine + Potassium bromide
darker brown solution
What is the difference between chlorine and chloride?
chlorine = Cl
chloride = Cl⁻⁻
What is the test for cl₂?
damp blue litmus paper bleaches / turns white
