Group 2 Flashcards
What is the trend of electron config in group 2?
elements in the same group all have the same number of electrons in the outer shell
all s2 outer shell config
What is the trend for atomic radii in group 2?
the size increases down the group = an extra shell of electrons is added so distance from nucleus increases
the distance is further increased by greater sheilding from inner shells and this outweighs the increasing nuclear charge
what is the trend for ionisation energies in group 2?
IE decreases down the group = more shells and sheilding outweight nuclear charge
what is the trend of reactivity in group 2?
increases down the group = decreasing IE so less activation energy is needed and less energy needed to make the atoms into ions
what does a reaction of a group 2 metal and oxygen produce?
the metal oxide
what does a reaction of a group 2 metal and water produce?
the metal hydroxide and hydrogen gas
what does a reaction of a group 2 metal and an acid produce?
the metal salt and hydrogen gas
what happens if excess water is added to a metal oxide?
an alkaline solution is formed
what is the trend in solubility in group 2?
solubility increases down the group
why do the solutions become increasingly alkaline down the group?
solubility increases down the group so the solution formed has a higher dissolved hydroxide ion concentration
what is obsvered when group 2 carbonates react with an acid?
vigourous effervescense
what two group 2 compounds are used in indigestion tablets?
calcium carbonate and magnisum hydroxide
How are group 2 compounds used as indigestion tablets?
they neutralise excess acid in the stomach as they arent as soluble in water there is no possiblity of the liquid in the mouth and stomach becoming alkaline
What is the use of calcium hydroxide?
used in agriculture to neutralise acidic soils large scale
as it is made relatively cheap from limestone
what is observed when Mg reacts with steam?
vigourous reaction with steam
no reaction with water
