Group 2 Flashcards

1
Q

What is the trend of electron config in group 2?

A

elements in the same group all have the same number of electrons in the outer shell
all s2 outer shell config

2
Q

What is the trend for atomic radii in group 2?

A

the size increases down the group = an extra shell of electrons is added so distance from nucleus increases
the distance is further increased by greater sheilding from inner shells and this outweighs the increasing nuclear charge

3
Q

what is the trend for ionisation energies in group 2?

A

IE decreases down the group = more shells and sheilding outweight nuclear charge

Q

what is the trend of reactivity in group 2?

A

increases down the group = decreasing IE so less activation energy is needed and less energy needed to make the atoms into ions

10
Q

why do the solutions become increasingly alkaline down the group?

A

solubility increases down the group so the solution formed has a higher dissolved hydroxide ion concentration

13
Q

How are group 2 compounds used as indigestion tablets?

A

they neutralise excess acid in the stomach as they arent as soluble in water there is no possiblity of the liquid in the mouth and stomach becoming alkaline

A

used in agriculture to neutralise acidic soils large scale
as it is made relatively cheap from limestone
