acids,bases and salts Flashcards
what is an acid?
a compound that releases H+ ions in an aqueous solution, it is described as a proton donor
What is a base?
a proton acceptor
What is an alkali?
a water-soluble base which releases OH- ions in an aqueous solution
How does ammonia act as a base?
it accepts H+ ions from water to form the ammonium ion NH4+
What is a neutralisation reaction?
negative ions are left uncharged in the aqueous solution, H+ ions reacts with the base
What is a salt?
a compound formed when the H+ ion from an acid is replaced by a metal ion or ammonium ion
What is the acid and metal oxide reaction?
acid + metal oxide —> salt + water
What is the acid and alkali reaction?
acid + alkali —-> salt + water
What is the acid and metal carbonate reaction?
acid + metal carbonate —> CO2 + salt + water
effervescence produced - CO2 produced
What is the acid and ammonia reaction?
acid + ammonia —> ammonium salt
What is the acid + metal reaction?
acid + metal —> salt + hydrogen
not an acid-base reaction
H+ gains an electron been reduced - redox reaction
What is a strong acid?
an acid that iodises completely in aqueous solutions
What is a weak acid?
an acid that is only partially ionised in aqueous solutions
