Graphing map skills Flashcards
What is a latitude
From left to right of the world
Tells us how far we are from the equator
What is a longitude?
From north to south on map
Tells us how far we are from the Greenwich meridian.
Important lines of latitudes.
North Pole = 90 Arctic circle = 66.5 Tropic of Cancer = 23.5N Equator = 0 Tropic of Capricorn 23.5S Antarctic circle = 66.5S South Pole = 90S
What’s NW?
North west.
What’s NE?
North east
What’s SW?
South west.
How do you plot on a geographical map?
You go to the bottom right corner of the box and go down the line(7).
Then you found the x axis so then go back to bottom right corner of original box and go left/right (5) .
4 grid reference.
Go to the bottom left.
Left/right (number)
Up/down (number)
6 grid reference
Find the 4 grid reference then In between do…. On box, do 10 lines across/ vertical. Use like graph. Look for x-axis and y-axis. Our in between the 4 grid. 625658
Hills on maps.
3 ways to show on map
Spot heights, layer coloring, contours.
What’s spot height?
These give the exact height of points on the map. There is a dot next to each number. The number is in meters.
What’s Layer coloring ?
This can also be called layer shading. Areas of different heights are shown by bands of different colors. Brown is usually used for high ground, and green for low ground. Always has to have a key on the side.
What’s a contour?
Contours are lines drawn on a map. They join places which have the same height. Usually colored in brown. Most of them have their height marked on the line. Height is given in meters.
A triangulation pillar is what?
And what map is it used on?
A triangulation pillar is also used to show height. These are drawn as a dot inside a blue triangle on the map.
Used on spot height.
what knoll in a map?
A low circle shaped hill on the end of a spur.
