Q

Taiga forest-

A

Plant and animals in the taiga are adapted to short growing seasons of long days that vary from cool to warm, winters are long and very cold, the days ares short. Warm climate means unfreezing permafrost.

Q

Adaptation in taiga

A
Pine trees (coniferous trees)
Cone shaped to let snow slide down so they can do photosynthesis and not lean because of weight. To prevent damaging branches

Q

Tundra

A

Extremely cold cos of suns rays are concentrated on a large surface area ( equator) and tundra and taiga are more north from the equator. (Higher latitudes) tundra is further north than taiga

Q

Tundra adaptation

A

The animals tend to have thicker feathers, skin, fur. Many with larger bodies and shorter arms, legs, tails which help them to retain heat better and prevent heat loss. Darker leaves to help absorb energy from sun. Below the top soil, ground is permanently frozen a year round. Snow as insulation - in snow it has a high percentage of air trapped in it so since air can barley move, heat transfer is reduced. So animals use snow for shelter or to hibernate.

Q

Deciduous forest-

A

In deciduous forest it has hot summers and cold winters. Animals produce more layers of fat or fur, feathers to help make it through cold winter months. Trees have thicker bark to protect them and they drop their leaves in winter which lets them store moisture and water.

Q

Steppe forest

A

Closest to the equator in 4 biomes of Russia. Dry, grassy plan. Steppe has extreme climatic conditions. It’s location is in the middle of Asia and Europe. Summers very warm; winters are very cold in the continental steppes because of the enormous distance from the nearest sea.

Q

Adaptations in taiga.

A

Thick feathers/fur skin=well insulated.

Short growing:
Don’t shed leaves in winter= photosynthesis when temperatures rise above 3 degrees.

To climate:
Needles flat =reduce surface area=reducing water loss.

Lack of sunlight:
Roots are shallow but wide=supports trees =allows to collect nutrients over large distance.
