Grant et al context dependent memory Flashcards
What was the aim of the study?
The aim was to study context dependent memory effects on both context and recognition
What method was used?
The researchers manipulated background noise with the use of headphones, making some participants study in with noise and others with silence.
What method design was used?
It was a independent measures design
What type of study is it?
Lab study
How many participants where there?
39 participants
Why was the study carried out?
To try and prove that context dependent memory played a bit part in revising and education
What was the conclusion of the study?
If the context is the same people can have a easier time remembering things if they experienced or learned in it a similar environment/contect
What where the results?
[recall] silent/silent: 6.7/10 silent/noisy:5.4/10 noisy/silent:4.6/10 noisy/noisy;6.2/10 [recognition] silent/silent:14.3/16 silent/noisy:12.7/16 noisy/silent:12.7/16 noisy/noisy:14.3/16
What debate does it relate to?
individual/situational
What are the pro’s of the study?
- It was highly controlled and it thus reliable
- it has high design validity
- it was ethical
What are the con’s?
-it had sample bias as each student experimenter recruited people they knew.
