Bandura et al's transmission of aggression Flashcards
What where the number of participants?
72 children
What experimental design was used?
Matched pairs design
What type of study was it?
Lab study
How was the study carried out?
It was carried out by exposing children to either an aggressive or non aggressive model and observing how aggressive the child was afterwards after being aggrivated
Why was the study carried out?
It was carried out to see if the behaviorist perspective was right about how we learn behaviors.
What happened in stage 1?
Children where taken into a room and either watched the model spend 9 of 10 minutes being aggressive to the bobo doll or simply played with the tinker toys and ignored the bobo doll
What happened in stage 2?
Children where taken into a smaller room with nice toys but was removed 2 minutes later after being told not just anyone could play with them before being taken into a different room
What happened in stage 3?
The child was left along in a room with similar items such as the bobo doll before being observed through a one way window by confederates.
How was the behavior observed?
Through a one way window by 2 observers who recorded down information every 5 seconds
What where the results?
On average kids where more aggressive in the aggressive model than the non aggressive and children more closely intimated the behavior of models of the same gender.
What was the conclusion of the study?
Simply observing behavior could produce imitative behavior which would not be expected had the behavior not been observed.
What where the strengths of the study?
- It has controlled participant variables
- its highly replicatable
What where the weaknesses of the study?
- It can be seen as unethical
- the sample does not tell us how adults would act in the same situation
What debate can it be linked to?
Nature/Nurture
