Consonants - Voicing
Voiced or Un-voiced sounds.
Consonants - Place of Articulation
The ability to physically move the tongue, lips, teeth, and jaw to produce sequences of speech sounds, which make up words and sentences.
Consonants - Manner of Articulation
The configuration and interaction of the articulators (speech organs such as the tongue, lips, and palate) when making a speech sound.
Vowels - Height
The height of the tongue during the articulation of a vowel.
Vowel - Roundedness
A vowel that is pronounced with the lips drawn together and forming a circular opening.
Vowel - Backness
The position of the tongue during the articulation of a vowel relative to the back of the mouth.
Assimilation
The process where sounds in separate words change when they are together in speech.
Consonance
The harmony produced by recurring sounds in a sequence of words. For example, the ‘s’ and ‘t’ in ‘sweet, silent, thought.’
Onomatopoeia
The formation and use of words that imitate the sounds associated with the objects or actions they refer to.
Rhythm
The regular recurrence of stresses (or prominent units) in speech.
Rhyme
Involved in the recurrent use of similar sounds or syllables at the end of the line. It is often used in poetry.
