Morphology
The study of how words are formed in a language.
Morpheme
The smallest unit of language - this could be a root word or a collection of letters.
Morpheme - examples

Free / root morpheme
A morpheme that can stand alone as a word.

Bound morpheme
A morpheme that can stand alone as a word, but combines with a root word to form a new word.
Bound morpheme - example
Un-.
Affix
A morpheme which could either come before, after or within a root word - it is the overarching term for prefixes, suffixes and infixes.

Trans-.
-tion.
-ed.
Prefix
A morpheme that comes before a root word to modify its meaning.
Prefix - example
Un-.
Suffix
A morpheme that comes after a root word to modify its meaning.
Suffix - example
-ly.
Infix
A word element which is inserted within the base form of a word to create a new word or intensify meaning - the most common type is an expletive.
Inflectional function
A type of suffix which shows either plurality or verb tense.

Derivational function
A type of affix which changes the meaning of the root word.
