How many types are there?
Four
Type 1 don’t take a direct object (intransitive) and are phrasal.
Type 2 do take a direct object (transitive) and are prepositional and inseparable.
Type 3 do take a direct object (transitive), and are phrasal and separable.
Type 4 do take a direct object (transitive), have two particles, are phrasal-prepositional and inseparable.
What are they?
Made up of a verb plus a particle (either preposition or adverb).
The meaning is not the same as that of the verb or particle used independently.
What similarities are there between mw verbs and normal verbs followed by adverbs or prepositions?
They may look identical, but they function differently. For example, ‘look up’.
Wha problems do learners have
Some learners get confused by the literal meaning of the words when they are functioning as mw verbs.
