Gram +ve Bacilli Flashcards
Corynebacteria Group
Pleomgraphic Gram +ve Bacilli
Two types of corynebacteria:
1 . diphtheroides
2. Corynebacterium diphtheriae
Diphtheriodes
- Aerobic
- Normal Flora
- Mostly non pathogenic
Diphtheriodes are normally found in :
Skin
Respiratory tract
Urinary tract
Corynebacterium diphtheriae
- Acute , serious , highly infectious disease
- Strains are facultative aerobss , non mobile, non sporting pleomorphic gram +ve Bacilli
- Produces chinese character arrangement
Corynebacterium diphtheriae has 3 biotypes:
- Gravis
- Mitis
- Intermedius
Corynebacterium diphtheriae spread by :
Droplets
Carriers are asymptomatic
Diphtheria toxoid is given
To children at ages of2,4,6 months of age
Listeria monocytogenes
- gram +ve small bacilli
- flagellated
- feebly motile at 25°C
Asymptomatic human carriers for listeria monocytogenes
- Intestines
- Vagina
Spore forming Bacilli
- gram +ve Bacilli
- Aerobic or anaerobic, survive for a long period in dryness
- They are mostly saprophytes
Common places for spore forming bacteria to be found:
- Soil
2.dust - Water and air
- Human/ Animal intestines and feces
Bacillus cereus:
↳ Aerobic bacilli group
- contamination of food
↳ produces a heat- stable enterotoxin
↳ cause vomiting and diarrhea
Treatment of bacillus cereus
conservative, no need for antibiotics
Bacillus Subtiles
↳small, short, thin bacillus
↳ Aerobic bacilli
↳ opportunistic pathogen
