🍇Gr.11 Physics T1 Flashcards
What is a normal force?
The force or component of a force which a surface exerts on an object with which it is in contact, and which is perpendicular to the surface
What is frictional force?
The force that opposes the motion of an object no which acts parallel to the surface.
What are the 2 types of friction?
Static friction and kinetic friction
What causes changes in maximum static friction?
How rough/ smooth the surface is.
What are the three non-contact forces?
Gravity, magnetic force, electrostatic forces
What do you call the region of space in which an object experiences a force?
Field
What is Newton’s first law of motion?
An object remains in its state of rest or uniform velocity unless a non-zero net force acts on it.
What do you call it when an object has no net force.
The object is in equilibrium
What factor affects inertia
Mass of the object
State Newton’s second law of motion.
When a net force is applied to an object with mass, the object accelerates in the direction of the net force. The acceleration is directly proportional to the net force and inversely proportional to the mass of the object.
State Newton’s third law of motion
When object A exerts a force on object B, object B simultaneously exerts a force on object A with equal magnitude and in the opposite direction.
State Newton’s Law of Universal Gravitation
Every particle in the universe exerts a force of attraction on every other particle. The force exerted by one particle on another is directly proportional to the product of their masses and inversely proportional to the square of the distance between them.
What must you do when asked to answer with reference to Newton’s law?
According to Newton’s First Law of Motion,….
State law, then refer to scenario
Give the unit for each variable in the formula:
Fnet = ma
F - N
m - kg
-2
a - m.s
Give the unit for each variable (except G) in the formula:
G.m1.m2 F = ----------- 2 r
F - N
m - kg
r - m
Static frictional force
The force that opposes the tendency of motion of a stationary object relative to a surface
Kinetic frictional force
The force that opposes the motion of a moving object relative to a surface
Do the following influence frictional force:
Velocity of object
Area of contact of object
Normal force
No
No (mass remains the same)
Yes
Weight
The gravitational force that the Earth exerts on any object on or near its surface
What does weightlessness refer to?
When only gravitational force acts on an object, nothing exerts a force of resistance to create the feeling of weight
Give the formula for Newton’s Second Law (it’s on the data sheet)
Fnet = ma
