GPWS Flashcards
GPWS was created to prevent
CFIT- controlled flight into terrain
GWS inputs
ADC(VSI & IAS) rad alt config IRS- attitude ILS - glide slope FMS - for enhanced GPWS
GWS out puts
master indication
amber below glide slope light
red pull up light
audio warning
Alert
caution
precedes a waring
crew must modify flight path or config unit alert stops
Warning
command that must be followed
done by flying max climb angle until reaching the MSA
alerts and warnings: genuine, nuisance, false
genuine- its legit
nuisance - system working correct butactivates in a safe situation
false- system not working correctly
GPWS limitation
can only see below and not infront
EPGWS
enhanced GPWS
includes forward looking terrain avoidance- terrain avoidance warnings systems (TAWS)
uses 3D terrain database which compares to a/c FMS position and looks ahead to predict threats
EPGWS alerts and warnings timings
alerts 40-60s
warnings 20-30s
EPGWS requirements
turbine: MTOM>5700kg or >9 Pax seats - TAWS A
piston: MTOM>5700kg or >9 Pax seats - TAWS B
TAWS A + B
both:
forward looking terrain avoidance
premature descent alert
voice call out 500ft above terrain
TAWS A also has
terrain display
needs 4-D FMS connection
what does an inhibitor switch do?
panel allows you to inhibit parts of the system
EPGWS errors
map shift- if a/c calculated position is wrong
GPWS is active between
50-2500ft (2450ft sometimes quoted)
based on rad alt
GPWS mode 1
excessive descent rate rate of descent is too high at low alt aural alert - sink rate sink rate aural warning - whoop whoop pull up visual warning - pull up
