Q

EPGWS

A

enhanced GPWS
includes forward looking terrain avoidance- terrain avoidance warnings systems (TAWS)
uses 3D terrain database which compares to a/c FMS position and looks ahead to predict threats

11
Q

TAWS A + B

A

both:
forward looking terrain avoidance
premature descent alert
voice call out 500ft above terrain

TAWS A also has
terrain display
needs 4-D FMS connection

16
Q

GPWS mode 2

A
excessive terrain closure rate
rapid closure rate between a/c and ground based on rad alt
aural alert - terrain terrain
aural warning- whoop whoop pull up
visual alert & warning - pull up
17
Q

GPWS mode 3

A

altitude loss after take off or go around
barometric alt lost after take off
aural alert- don’t sink don’t sink
visual warning - pull up

18
Q

GPWS mode 4

A
unsafe terrain clearance
too close to ground for a specific phase of flight
mode 4A: with gear retracted
aural alert- too low gear
visual warning - pull up

mode 4B: gear extended flaps retracted
aural alert- too low flaps
visual warning- pull up

19
Q

GPWS mode 5

A

glide slope deviation alert - if too far beneath g/s
aural alert - glide slope glide slope
visual warning - below glide slope light

20
Q

GPWS mode 6

A

altitude and excessive bank angle call outs
rad alt based call outs
minimums call outs
bank angle bank angle call out- excessive bank angles at low alt

21
Q

GPWS mode 7

A
wind shear alert - activates when a/c is in wind shear
inputs:
airspeed
ground speed
vertical speed
AOA
wind
aural alert- wind shear wind shear
perform wind shear go around
active below 1500ft on rad alt
22
Q

predictive wind shear

A

uses weather radar to spot wind shear associated with moisture and displays the affected area on the ND
wind shear wind shear - perform standard go around
avoid affected area

23
Q

terrain display

A

different colours used to show where terrain is relative to a/c

24
Q

terrain clearance floor

A

eventually get low enough on approach that GPWS would activate
area built around runway in which activation is limited
this will only activate for the runway you choose in the FMS
