FANS Flashcards
FANS
future air navigation systems
text based messaging and data link comms
Why is FANS needed?
issues with radio comms:
poor radio signal
misinterpreting comms
congestion
by using FANS
improves ATC efficiency
allows more aircraft to safely use the same airspace
what does FANS need?
a global aeronautical telecommunications network (ATN)
two versions of FANS
older- uses existing infrastructure in a new way
newer- custom built for this specific network
FANS services provided by
SITA
ARINIC
satellites operated by
INMARSAT
FANS a/c components: ATSU
air traffic service unit - comms management (CMU) FMS CDU printer maintenance coms ATC visual annunciator
downlink
data sent from aircraft to ground
uplink
data sent from ground to aircraft
ACARS
aircraft communication addressing & reporting system
allows txt based comms with operator
limited interaction with ATC
certain automatic transmissions
all accessed via CDU
D-ATIS- digital ATIS
txt msg- to operator
Wx request - METAR & TAF
DCL- digital clearance- departure & oceanic
OOOI msg- records out, off, on , in times
CPDLC
controller pilot datalink communication
accessed via CDU or a dedicated panel
allows for txt messaging between pilot and ATC
free text or formatted message (pre set message pilot or ATC fill in)
possible messages
FL changes route changes voice contact request oceanic clearances constraints ATC transfer request
not allowed in a message
T/O clearance
landing clearance
taxi clearance
FANS log on
before using system must log on
enter certain details like flight number and aircraft reg
aircraft capabilities entered- may not be able to fully utilise all functions
