usually big toe
accute inflammation of a single joint
rapdi onset - hours
Dental aspects of gout
avoid aspirin - interferes with uric acid removal
drug treatments can cause recurrent oral ulcerations - e.g allopurinol
Osteoarthritis
degenrative joint diease
mainly hips, hands, knees
signs - joint swelling and deformity, hard bony nodules,
symptoms - pain which improves with rest and increases with actitivty, brief morning stiffness, slowly progressive over years
Treatment for osteoarthritis
NSAIDs
steriods - hydrocortisone injections
joint replacement
Dental aspects of osteroarthtirtis
TMJ can be involved
difficulty in accessing care
Chronic NSAID use - oral ulcerations, higher bleeding tendency if on anti-plateltes
consider antibiotic prohylaxis if had joint replacement
