Goodbye Herons, hello celebrity by Andrew Brown Flashcards
According to Andrew Brown, what is the first thing dictionaries should show?
Dictionaries should expand and inspire the reader to discover more. Additionally, excite them.
According to Andrew Brown, what shouldn’t dictionaries do? Give examples.
Dictionaries shouldn’t add new words such as knowing the names of ‘celebrities’, ‘vandalism’ & ‘creep’
Lastly, according to Brown what should dictionaries promote? Give examples.
Dictionaries should promote and preserve old words to remind of the past, and encourage intelligence. Such as the lexical field of countryside ‘Ivy, lavender, leek’, lexical field of flowers & nature: ‘Acorn, allotment, almond, apricot’ and lastly of Christian or Religion ‘bishop’, ‘chapel’, ‘alter’ and ‘devil.’
What metaphor does Brown use to compare modern lexicography? Remember to analyse the metaphor on a linguistic level.
The writer compares modern lexicography as “bureaucratic porridge” that is a “crime” if offered to children. This gives us as negative and unpleasant experience about new words that will hinder the imagination of the children. Furthermore, give them a distaste towards the new words.
What is the first language change idea that is hinted in Brown’s article?
Linguistic determinism; language determines thought. English language allows the writer to dictate his viewpoint on how the English language should be, since the it was formed on the basis on these words. But each thought it too it’s individual and everyone has their different thoughts
And the second?
Linguistic reflectionism: Language reflects the way we see the world. The words mentioned by Brown, we’re created to describe how we should characterise objects, ideas, concepts and theories. Etc. Brown argues that we should continue to use and promote these words otherwise children will no longer have these words to reflect the world.
