Global English: Overivew Flashcards
What is the Globalisation of English?
It’s the spread of the English language in countries all over the world. Not only that but also the rapid spread of English as a second and foreign language
What does this mean in terms of English being Standardised?
Globalisation is likely to mean that we end up with a standardised World English, which may well have different features to British English (of course, it’s likely to be modelled on US English) -Beth Kemp says.
Why is it occurring?
Globalisation of English is occurring because of:
- Increased global trading i.e lingua franca.
- the internet and software operating largely in English.
- Education: Schools around the world learning English within their classroom.
What are the disadvantages of Globalisation of English?
- The death of local languages and cultures.
- Contaminate languages and cultures such as likes of French banning the use of English words, China with “Chinnglish” etc.
- It’s skews the socio-economic order; those businesses who speak English are at a better advantage than those who don’t.
What is a native speaker, first language speaker?
Native Speaker: Language learnt since you were born
First Language Speaker: Similar to NS, perhaps you did not learn the language since you were born but rather than a young age.

What is happening with Language change in relation to the Globalisation of English?
anguage Change happens synchronically (at the same time) not diachronically (over time) with the Globalisationof English langauge

How can we define ‘international Englishes’?
International = Global, any country.
English = Well, the language but not as UK/US.
International English is any variety of English. It can also be English within English.
What factors have helped influence the use of ‘International English’? In what scenarios or contexts would you see this form being used in?
- Education (People learning English)
- Work
- First-speakers/Native Speakers
- Media.
Can we think of International English as a combination of BSE + ASE?
To me, I don’t think it is because now more than ever is there a demand for other languages to use their own languages and influence English, so that they can make it their own.
I mean, the type of ‘Internationl English’ in which the country uses as a standard for the country, may be either BSE/ASE however there is now that element of how do we make English our own?
Such as in lingua franca settings and contexts where business persons can communicate with their different varieties of English and create something to be able to communicate effectively.
Does Internet help influence the spread of International Englishes?
Yes and No.
Whilst there is a growing trend and feed of English resources and media for language learners to pick up from and learn, there is a now a greater ever more larger community of varieties of languages for people to come be part in. Once, English was the dominant language with the creation of Internet and Google leading the platform it was a language to be looked up to. Now, there is an uprising for people to start accepting their identity and be proud of the languages they speak that they were so heavily repressed upon in the past.
