What does Question 3 require you to do?
Focuses on how the writer has used language to present ideas and opinions about language issues. You should assess and evaluate how the writer positions the reader to present his idea about language issues.
What do you need to focus on? (1)
AO1: Apply appropriate methods of language analysis, using associated terminology and coherent written expression.
To aim for Level 5 you must:
1. Choose relevant and correct language features.
2. Precise.
3. Spot patterns of language use.
What do you need to remember AO1?
Remember, this question is about how the WRITER has used language. You should prefer to precise points of language detail included in the DATA. It must be appropriate linguistic terminology and the language levels you select for analysis will be suitable and relevant to the data provided
What do you need to focus on? (2)
AO3: Analyse and evaluate how contextual factors and language features are associated with the construction of meaning.
To aim for Level 5 you must:
1. Interpret meaning and link to context. (The WRITER’S choice of language to present the issues about language)
2. Analyse meaning and representations (How does the writer position the issue?)
3. Evaluate (Why was the contextual factors necessary to present the issues, was it effective?)
What do you need to remember about AO2?
You should take into account it’s intended audience and therefore consider to genre, structure an language choices have been shaped by the text producer to create particular effects.
What do you need to focus on? (3)
AO4: Explore connections across texts, informed by linguistic concepts and methods.
To aim for Level 5 you must:
1. Link language features & interpreting with examples.
2. Analysing the language features linking with their contextual factors.
3. Evaluate the links. (Why this language feature with this genre?)
What do you need to remember about AO5?
You must able to evaluate why there was this pattern of a particular language use with this data and why there a pattern of language with other. With precision and accuracy.
What are top 5 tips for thi question?
- The start allows the examiner to give enough information for the student to write an answer.
- “Present Views” was seen in Paper 1, you need to talk about what is being represented and how it is being represented.
- It is not necessary to include the writer’s name because it is his view that is being pushed forward.
- You need to “characterise” your introduction to show your examiner that you understand the text. See below for examples.
- Words you shouldn’t use are “persuade” and “argue”, you must choose more appropriate sophisticated language choices to characterise your view.
