Q

Examples of forgiveness

A

Amy Biehl’s parents.
Amy Biehl was murdered in a racist attack whilst helping to fight for equality in South Africa

Parents spoke up at the trial of the convicted and enabled a pardon.
They met with the two of the convicted men-got to know them and their families. Two men were able to say they were sorry and the parents helped them get on with their lives-restorative justice.
Parents set up the Amy Biehl foundation to give black youth after school clubs and opportunities-stop the falling into gangs

Anthony Walker
Anthony was killed in a racist attack and stabbed to death. His mother and sister forgave the killers- his mother thought that carrying unforgiveness around was too much of a burden for her and she had to forgive his killers. As a Christian he followed the Bible- Jesus said to forgive 70 times 7.

Q

Some Christians argue forgiveness is not always appropriate

A

Sometimes, only God can forgive some crimes-on the cross, Jesus says “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.”

Mary never openly forgave Jesus’ killers.

Repentance is a key part of forgiveness and reconciliation. If the criminal is not sorry, may be they should not be forgiven e.g. in the prodigal son parable, the father forgives the son because he was sorry.

Q

Origins of good and evil in Buddhism

A

Goodness from skilful acts driven by metta and karuna. Evil from unskilful acts driven by tanha and leading to the three poisons.

17
Q

How do Buddhists know what goodness is

A

From the dharma-8 fold path, 5 precepts and 6 paramitas.

18
Q

Why do Christians believe God is omnipotent

A

Miracles-parts the red sea for Moses.
Sent 10 plagues to the Egyptians.
Creation-creates everything from nothing.
Jesus rose from the dead.

19
Q

Why do Christians believe God is omnibenevolent

A

Gave his only son to save humans from sin.
Example of Jesus-cured blind, loving towards outcasts.
Through Jesus, taught forgiveness.

20
Q

What is Epicurus’ inconsistent triad

A

God is omnipotent and benevolent yet evil exists.
If God is loving he would want to stop evil Perhaps he is not loving.
If he is powerful, he could stop evil, perhaps he can not stop it.
Or perhaps God does not exist or evil does not exist.
Epicurus concludes God does not exist.

21
Q

Augustine’s response to Epicurus

A

Perfect world
The Fall
Original sin.
Inherited by everyone else
Natural and moral evil.
Jesus’ atoning death.
Heaven and hell.

22
Q

Weaknesses of Augustine’s theodicy

A

A perfect world cannot go wrong.
Price of free will is not worth it.
God created hell so knew his world would go wrong.
Assumes humans are free-what if they are not?

23
Q

Irenaeus/Hick’s response to Epicurus

A

God makes an imperfect world-natural evil.
God gives humans free will so that humans can develop into God’s likeness.-
Vale of soul making-needs to be challenges so humans can develop and make choices.
Some abuse this free will-Moral evil
This development continues in life after death so all humans will eventually go to heaven (Hick)

24
Q

Weaknesses of Irenaeus/Hick

A

Free will not worth the price.
What if humans are not free.
Could gain virtues with less evil.

25
Q

Liberal Christians responses to suffering (weakness for each)

A

Helps humans to develop virtues-could be less evil for this.
Humans must be free to develop so cause suffering to others when they abuse freedom-free will not worth innocent child suffering.
God understands suffering through Jesus and is with people in their suffering.

26
Q

Catholic response to suffering (weakness for each)

A

Suffering is a consequence of free will.
It is a punishment for human sin-God not loving.
Promise of heaven for those who turn to Jesus-What if there is no heaven?

27
Q

Catholic beliefs on free will

A

Given to humans so that they can freely choose to love God. Love which is chosen is the higheset form of love.
Abuse of free will leads to moral evil.
Augustine-abuse of free will has led to natural evil.
Some will use their free will to turn to Jesus and will be saved.

28
Q

Liberal Christian ideas on free will

A

Free will given so that humans can develop God’s qualities and grow to be like him.
So abuse it and this causes moral evil.
In the end, all will use their free will wisely and evolve to be like God (Hick)-soul making. This will continue in an after life.

29
Q

Buddhist ideas on free will

A

Humans are influenced by karma and pratitya. This means that they are conditioned by their environment and conditioned by their past actions.
However, the human realm is one in which beings are free. So they can change their habits and ways of thinking by meditating-right mindfulness and concentration. This will free them from this conditioning and help them to achieve enlightenment.

30
Q

What is vindication

A

to uphold the law.

31
Q

What is retribution

A

32
Q

33
Q

A

to deter people from committing the crime again or deter others from doing it.

34
Q

What is reformation

A

to change the criminal for the better so they stop offending.

35
Q

What is protection

A

to protect society from criminals.
