Q

Story of Job

A

People suffer as a test of their faith.

Good people suffer a lot because the devil wants to turn them from God.

(Job loses everything-his home, his family and gets a terrible skin disease. He questions his suffering with his friends and decides on the above)

Q

Describe the crucifixion

A

Jesus was made to carry his cross and was helped by Simon of Cyrene. He was offered wine to drink but refused it. The Romans divided up his clothes by drawing lots

He was nailed to the cross and on the top they put “This is Jesus. King of the Jews”. Those below mocked him and asked him to save himself if he really was the son of God.

He was crucified between two thieves. As he dies, he cries out to God “Why have you forsaken me?” and he is offered wine vinegar. When he dies the earth shakes and the temple curtain comes down. Many women mourned him.

Q

Why is the incarnation important to Christians

A

Enabled God to atone for human sin - example of lamb in OT
“he was pierced for our transgressions”
“he gave his only son so that all who believed in him would have eternal life”
“this is my body which i shed for you”

God could understand human suffering.
- betrayal - Judas
- physical pain - thorns
- illegal trial

God could show humans the perfect way to behave through Jesus and his teaching e.g. love thy neighbour.

Q

Why is the atonement important

A

It shows God’s grace (love) because he sacrificed his son to bring humans back to him. “For God so loved the world….”

In bridging the gap between humans and God, Jesus opens the way to eternal life. “So all who believe in him may have eternal life.” “I am the way, the truth..no one can get to the Father except through me.”

He fulfils Old Testament prophecy as Isaiah predicts that there will be a suffering servant who will die for the sins of others. “He was pierced for our transgressions.”

Q

Describe the resurrection

A

His tomb was found empty by three women-Mary, Mary the mother of James and Joanna

The women were told by Two angels-why do you look for the living amongst the dead.

In another account, Mary visits the tomb on her own and mistakes Jesus for gardener.

The disciples did not believe the women. Peter has to go and look in the tomb himself

Jesus appeared to the disciples and they only believed once he broke the bread and drunk the wine with them.

Doubting Thomas asks to see Jesus’ wounds.

In one account, there is an earthquake and the stone in front of the tomb rolls away.

St Paul says that Jesus appeared to five hundred women and men after he had appeared to the disciples.

Q

Why is the ascension important

A

It shows that even though Jesus is no longer physically on earth, God’s spirit will still be with Christians. This was evidenced at the Pentecost when the Holy Spirit came upon the disciples and gave them the strength to spread Jesus’ message.

It shows Jesus is waiting in heaven for Christians. This is affirmed in the Apostles’ creed, read out in church each week. “He is seated at the right hand of the Father”
- “he will come again to judge the living and the dead”
- “i believe in the forgiveness of sins, in the resurrection of the body and in life everlasting”

Q

Why is salvation important

A

It is a reminder of the important roles of the Trinity
- Christians believe that as the Father, God is loving and wants all people to be saved. “For God so loved the world, he sent his only son so that all who believe in him will not perish but have eternal life.
- Jesus always forgave people. He says to Peter to forgive 70 times 7 times.

It is taught by the church
- The Catholic Church teaches that Christians must take part in the 7 sacraments including confession to be saved. Confession includes repentance, contrition and penance.
- Some Protestant Church teach that baptism and holy communion (eating the bread and drinking the wine) are important to cleanse people of sin by the Holy Spirit to be saved.

20
Q

Importance of Holy Spirit for salvation

A

Believed to be present in the sacraments of baptism and the eucharist. Cleanses huamans of sin during these.

It is a sign of God’s grace that he sent the Holy spirit to save humans.

It is an important part of Evangelical worship and brings gifts such as healing and speaking in tongues.

It came upon the disciples at the Pentecost to show they needed to spread the gospel to all nations.

21
Q

Catholic approach to salvation

A

Need confession, contrition, repentence, penance. Salvation is through Jesus’ atoning death. Must take mass, be baptised (the sacraments) Holy spirit is present at these and cleanses of sin.

22
Q

Protestant approach to salvation

A

Don’t need a priest for salvation. Need to be sorry. Don’t agree with confession. Should pray to God to receive forgiveness. Salvation comes through Jesus’ death. Some Protestants believe Holy Spirit will cleanse sins in baptism and holy communion.

23
Q

What is liturgical worship + pros and cons

A

Set pattern to worship e.g. Anglican church-set service for Holy communion e.g. biblical readings, sermon, prayers, holy communion.

Good-sets the pattern that Jesus set up e.g. Lord’s prayer, sermon on the Mount and his last supper.

Con-Not so much room for people to be moved by the Holy Spirit.

24
Q

What is non liturgical worship + pros and cons

A

No set pattern to worship e.g. Quakers.
Moved by the Holy Spirit-speak in tongues etc.

Good-Mirrors the Pentecost when the Holy Spirit came upon the disciples and they started talking in tongues.

Con-could miss out important practices which Jesus set up e.g. his last supper which is remembered in Holy communion/eucharist.

25
Q

What does eschatology mean

A

study of death

26
Q

Evangelical views about life after death

A

Traditional Evangelical-heaven and hell are places. They are referred to as places in the Bible (revelations says hell is a lake of fire).
Sheep and the Goats-judgement will be at the end of time. Those who have looked after others will go to heaven and those who have ignored those who are suffering will go to hell.

Rich man and Lazarus-If you ignore those in need, you will go to hell and no one will be able to save you. You must listen to the words of the prophets and heed them to go to heaven.

27
Q

Liberal Christian view on life after death

A

Liberal Christians believe that heaven and hell and spiritual states and not places. Hell is feeling separated from God and heaven is being with God. Space exploration has never found heaven and hell.

Some liberal Christians believe that there will be no hell. A loving God would not send anybody to eternal hell.

It will be our soul which lives on because a spiritual body may refer to soul immortality. Heaven and hell are not physical places so we will not have a physical body in them-Evidence for this is that Jesus’ disciples did not immediately recognise Jesus after his resurrection, indicating that it may been his spiritual presence rather than a physical one.
