Q

What is muscle length

A

the ability of a muscle crossing a joint to lengthen allowing 1 joint or a series of joint to move thru available ROM
(also described as flexibility

Q

Why do we need to quantify ROM

A

-objective or hypermobile, hypomobile or normal
establish a baseline to see improvement or lack of
develop plan of care and goals

Q

what is the procedure for measuring ROM

A
  1. start as close to 0 as possibly
  2. stabilize proximal joint segment
slowly move distal joint to end of PROM, determine end feel, monitor discomfort and visually estimate ROM
  3. landmarks….set up axis and align device using landmarks
  4. compensations-realign as needed
  5. record range of motion (start and end)

Q

guidelines for assessing muscle lenght

A
  1. muscle placed in position to allow full ROM
  2. place muscle lengthened across proximal joint
  3. hold joint in rom while mov 2nd joint through full ROM
  4. ensure proper alignment and use goniometer to measure if able
