What is the media?
An organised means of communication by which large numbers of different people can be reached quickly.
What is commercialism?
The process of attempting to gain money from an activity.
What is merchandising?
The practise in which the brand or image from one ‘product’ is used to sell another.
What is sponsorship?
When a company pays for their products to be publicly displayed or advertised, usually in an attempt to increase the sales of their goods.
Why is the triangle seen as golden?
Because it has a large potential for £££.
How does the media use sport?
The media uses sport to gain viewers, listeners and readers (an audience).
How is media used by business?
Advertising to reach the same audience as the media.
How does the media use business?
Advertising space is paid for competitively.
How does sport use the media?
To attract people to the sport and increase engagement.
How does business use sport?
They advertise their product through sponsorships.
How does sport use business?
Sport receives large amounts of money for promoting brands (kit sponsors etc.)
How can the golden triangle be disadvantageous for sport?
- Increased deviancy.
- Increased pressure to win.
- Only certain sports get coverage.
- Sponsors may become over-dominant.
Which company sponsors Manchester United, why do they do this?
Chevrolet, they sponsor it to appear in the media such as Sky Sports and BBC which exposes viewers to the company and viewers may be more inclined to buy a Chevrolet car in the future.
Each part of the ‘golden triangle’ is mutually dependant, what does this mean?
they all rely on each others success to be successful themselves.
Newspapers such as The Times and The Guardian depend on sport as part of the ‘Golden Triangle’, why is it so important to them?
Sport makes up several pages of these newspapers and good sports stories will encourage people to purchase them and therefore generate income for these companies.

Leicester Tigers require large amounts of money in order to be successful, as they are required to purchase players, pay staff wages and maintain a stadium. Holland & Barratt will increase the income for the Tigers as they will pay a large amount to be seen on their shirts. Similarly BT Sport will pay Tigers a large amount of money in order to gain broadcasting rights.

What are the negative effects of social media on sports performers’ and sport?
- Individual sports stars may suffer from trolling and online abuse.
- Individuals may spend more time on social media and less time training.
- Fake news stories can appear about sports stars and teams.
Social Media such as Facebook, Twitter and YouTube have had a huge impact on the globalisation of sport, how is this evident?
- Millions of people following sports icons on Twitter and Instagram.
- Highlights watched by millions of viewers on YouTube.
- Live sport streamed on Facebook and Twitter around the world.
- Sport is one of the highest trending topics on Twitter.
Characteristics of ‘globalised’ sport?
- Worldwide competition.
- Worldwide governing bodies.
- Constant travel between countries.
- Teams followed by fans.
Suggest reasons why not all sports performers, such as women, will benefit from success at the Olympic Games? (4)
- Females will receive less money when representing their country at the Olympics.
- This is because sponsors may choose to endorse male athletes who receive more media coverage.
- Females are less likely to become global icons following the Olympic Games.
- This is because female events are not shown at ‘prime time’ and therefore are not shown in the media in the same way male athletes are.
Explain the reasons for companies investing such large amounts of money in sport? (3)
- Companies will invest money in sports in order to increase their brand awareness around the world.
- They will also invest in sport in order to associate their product with the healthy image of sport.
- Investment may also be made in order to lower their tax rate through sponsorship.
