What are the benefits of setting goals?
Provides motivation Increase confidence Lowers arousal Sustains effort Reduces anxiety
Describe what an outcome goal is and give a sporting example
Goal set against the performance of others and based on a result
E.g winning FA cup, standard of performance is secondary , win at all costs
Describe what a task orientated goal is and give a sporting example
Focused on getting a better performance not so worried about the result. E.g loose race but still improve your PB which is still success and maintains motivation.
Describe what a performance goal is and give a sporting example
When athlete sets a goal to better their own performance rather than comparing to others. (Individual sports, e.g setting PB)
Describe what a process goal is and give a sporting example
Based on improving technique, which will help to improve overall skill. E.g wrapped foot on a cross
Identify and explain the smart principles
S: specific - goals must be clear, allowing specific improvement to be made
M: measurable - objective data driven so success can be measured and compared
A: achievable - performer should be able to reach their goal, motivation is maintained
R: realistic - the goals need to be reachable to maintain motivation
T: time bound - short and long term goals need to be identified so all concerned have deadline to keep to
E: evaluate - evaluate how the goal was achieved
R: re-do - goal can be repeated if not achieved
