What is anxiety?
A negative aspect of stress which is characterised by irrational thinking,loss of conc and fear of failure
What are the two types of anxiety
Trait anxiety- which is innate and is the personality trait, consistent,stable. E.g player worrying before all games or anxious behaviour all the time. High trait anxiety means performer is more likely to have higher state anxiety.
State- it is situation dependent and a temporary rush of anxiety. It caused by threatening circumstances. E.g taking a penalty
Describe a competitive trait
Performer is naturally anxious in all sporting situations
Generally have trait anxiety
Describe a competitive state
Performer is anxious in specific sporting situations only
Can be caused by negative past experiences
High pressure e.g taking a penalty
What is cognitive anxiety ?
Is where the greater it is the worse the performance e.g irrational thinking and loss of conc
What is somatic anxiety ?
Similar to inverted U where it increases performance till a certain point then it decreases. Examples would be increased HR.
Give characteristics of somatic anxiety
It is physiological- shaking,muscular tension, poor co-ordination, sweating, increased HR
Give characteristics of cognitive anxiety
It is psychological- irrational thinking (nerves), worrying, confusion,loss of conc
Greater cognitive anxiety, worse the performance
Causes of anxiety
Being watched Running out of time when losing Letting down the team Playing badly Injury Increased competition
How can you measure anxiety, give +&-
You can measure anxiety through questionnaires
