Goal: 5: Fetal Circulation Flashcards
Through what chamber does fetal oxygenated blood flow through? What vessels carries it?
- right atrium
- IVC carries the oxygenated blood to right atrium
After oxygenated blood gets to the right atrium, where else does it pass to get to the ascending aorta?
-right atrium, foramen ovale, left atrium, left ventricle, ascending aorta
Deoxygenated or venous blood goes in through what vessel? How does it get to the arch of the aorta?
- SVC
- SVC, right atrium, right ventricle, out pulmonary trunk, through ductus arteriosus, arch of aorta
What structure does venous blood go through, bypassing the lungs?
Ductus arteriosus
What are the 3 shunts, in order, in the fetal circulation? Which closes first?
- ductus venosus, oval foramen, ductus arteriosus
- oval foramen
How does the saturation of blood change in relation to the placenta?
- saturation decreases as it goes AWAY from the placenta
- saturation increases as it goes TOWARDS the placenta
What keeps the patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) open? Why does it close after birth?
- prostaglandin— when the fetus receives this from the mother, the PDA remains open
- after birth, bradykinin acts on smooth muscles of PDA anf closes it
When the ductus arteriosus closes, what does it turn into?
Ligamentum arteriosus
What’s the name of the substance in the umbilical cord? Whats the function?
- Wharton’s jelly
- acts as a natural clamo and constricts the umbilical vessels
Prenatally, how is the pulmonary resistance and 02 amount? Postnatally?
- pre: increased pulmonary resistance, low 02 in lungs
- post: less pulmonary resistance, so lung can expand, air enters te aveoli= increased 02
The round ligament of the liver turns into what vessel?
Left Umbilical vein
The foramen ovale becomes what?
Fossa ovalis in atrial septum
The umbilical vein becomes what?
Ligamentum teres aka round ligament of the liver
The ductus venosus becomes what?
Ligamentum venosum
The two umbilical arteries become what?
Medial umbilical ligaments
