How many levels are involved with the GMFCS?
5 levels
1-5
Describe Level 1
Children walk at home, school, community.
Can climb stairs w/o railing.
Can perform gross motor skills, but balance and coordination are limited
Describe Level 2
Children walk in most settings and climb stairs holding onto a railing.
May have difficulty walking long distances.
Have minimal ability to perform running and jumping.
May require mobility device or use wheeled mobility over long distances
Describe Level 3
Can walk using hand-held mobility device in most indoor settings
May climb stairs holding onto railing with supervision/assistance
Use wheeled mobility over long distances, may self-propel for shorter distances
Describe Level 4
Children use methods of mobility that require physical assistance or powered mobility in most settings
May walk for short distances at home with assistance or body support walker
Uses manual wheelchair when in community
Describe Level 5
Children transported in manual wheelchair in all settings
Children limited in their ability to maintain antigravity head and trunk postures
At what age do children with CP typically reach their full potential on the GMFCS?
90% reach potential before 3 years for most severe cases (level 5)
Rest reach full potential by age 5 for Level 1
A child can walk indoors and outdoors, climb stairs without limitation, what level is he?

Physical impairments restrict voluntary control of movement and the ability to maintain anti-gravity head and trunk postures. What level?
Level 5
Children may walk for short distances with walker or rely on wheeled mobility at home and school in the community
Level 4
Children walk indoors and outdoors and climb stairs holding onto railing. However, they experience limitations on uneven surfaces and inclines.
Level II
Children walk indoors and outdoors on level surface with an AD. May be able to climb stairs holding on to railing. Children may propel a wheelchair manually or are transported for long distances.
Level III
