Glycogen Flashcards
1
Q
glycogen
A
- starch like polymer
- short term fix for a few hours of hypoglycemia
2
Q
when during the day is liver glycogen the highest
A
-in the evening before bed
3
Q
glycogen is the major sources of glucose until…
A
about 16 hours of starvation
4
Q
linkages of glycogen
A
- alpha 1,4 between adjacent glucose molecules
- alpha 1,6 at the branch site
5
Q
why make glycogen?
A
- glucose transport is facilitated, so if you had a high concentration it would leak out
- high glucose would cause a major osmotic problem
- high glucose would glycate proteins
6
Q
where is glycogen found
A
- 100g in the liver
- 400g in the muscle
7
Q
glycogen synthase
-what does it do and why is it important?
A
- elongates the chain by one glucose molecule at a time
- does this by the 4’ OH of a glucose at the end of the chain
- this is the limiting, regulated step (glucose 6 P plus a covalent modification)
8
Q
branching enzyme
A
terminal segment of growing chain is transerred to form a branch link to a different chain
