Q

why make glycogen?

A
  • glucose transport is facilitated, so if you had a high concentration it would leak out
  • high glucose would cause a major osmotic problem
  • high glucose would glycate proteins

Q

glycogen synthase

-what does it do and why is it important?

A
  • elongates the chain by one glucose molecule at a time
  • does this by the 4’ OH of a glucose at the end of the chain
  • this is the limiting, regulated step (glucose 6 P plus a covalent modification)
