Consists of digital acquisition, display workstations and storage devices interconnected through a network
PACS- Picture archival and communication system
Standards that allow imaging modalities and PACS to communicate in the same “language”
DICOM- Digital Imaging and communications in medicine
A network that connects computers locally across short distances, EX: within a building and or complex
LAN- Local Area Network
Computer network that extends over a large area, which can include global coverage
WAN- Wide Area Network
Holds patients full medical information from hospital billing to inpatient ordering
HIS- Hospital information system
Holds all radiology specific data, including patient scheduling to the radiologist dictated and transcribe report
RIS- radiology information system
Failure of an imaging system to record densities usually caused by lack of x-ray photons
Quantum mottle/noise
